Shooting at Howe Park Results in Four People Injured in Sacramento County's Arden-Arcade Neighborhood

Law enforcement in Sacramento are probing a shooting that broke out Saturday evening at the Howe Community Park area as law enforcement were breaking up an unauthorized event of several hundred people.

Prior to the Shooting

Sacramento County law enforcement were first called to Howe Community Park just after 6:30 PM on April 18 after being notified of people potentially armed with concealed firearms. Following that, a follow-up call was made regarding an alleged brawl happening at the location.

A law enforcement helicopter was sent to survey the area but was unable to locate the reported altercation. Nevertheless, it became clear that hundreds of people had gathered without authorization without any permit or approval.

When the Shots Rang Out

Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies worked to disperse the crowd by positioning themselves around the crowd and issuing commands over loudspeakers commanding the hundreds present to disperse at once. About 15 minutes were provided for people to comply.

At the height of the dispersal effort that 20 to 25 gunshots were fired. Gunfire sparked chaos as hundreds ran. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies immediately began locating gunshot victims.

Four Victims Hospitalized

By the time the scene was secured, four gunshot victims were confirmed as gunshot victims. All four — consisting of one woman and three men all believed to be in their 20s — were taken to local Sacramento hospitals. Medical personnel reported that two of the four had injuries classified as immediate, one had moderate injuries, and one victim's wounds were minor. Fortunately, all four were in stable condition.

The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District also responded and aided in treating the injured before they were taken to the hospital.

Physical Evidence

The main crime scene was determined to have unfolded along the Cottage Way corridor alongside the Home Depot store on the 2200 block of Howe Avenue. Investigators recovered further ballistic evidence in the form of shell casings on Cottage Way. Projectile impacts were discovered in the metal fencing surrounding the Home Depot store. This evidence suggested that a shooter had been aiming south from the Cottage Way area in the direction of the Home Depot store. That Home Depot location was temporarily locked down while law enforcement worked the area. Crime scene personnel worked tirelessly late into the evening.

Arrests Made

Information relayed over police scanner frequencies indicated that a Kia vehicle had been detained in the Solano County area. Four individuals were detained.
